Years of Wonders Social Structure free essay sample
The social structure and institutions of the village of Eyam are severely challenged during the year of the plague. Discuss The small town of Eyam was enveloped with the Bubonic plague in 1665-1666. In Geraldine Brooksââ¬â¢ historical fiction ââ¬ËYear Of Wondersââ¬â¢ relationships, beliefs values, laws and friendships are threatened in the village at every level, however not all outcomes are negative from the devastation of a collapsing town. The novel demonstrated that it Is possible for strong characters or even reserved characters to take initiative in a fundamental time, despite the collapsing of their society around them. During the plague, villagers were torn between their faith in God and superstitious beliefs. The novels protagonist Anna Frith faithfully follows Mompellionââ¬â¢s guidance after the plague strikes. However as misery upon misery pile up, she begins to question her faith. The struggle with death and darkness ultimately costs Anna her faith in God. Overtime, her faith becomes tattered, and she is not sure what she believes in. The Novels leader, Michael Mompellion, the distraught and defeated young man closes his bible after he accuses god of being a ââ¬Å"poor listenerâ⬠. Brooks placement of the bible falling is symbolic of his personal fall from grace. ââ¬Å" His hand on the bible, but he never opens it, not anymoreâ⬠¦. The bible hit the floor with a dull thud. â⬠Expand Puritan beliefs fade, they begin to question the bible and god. expand Men were more superior then women in the 17th century. However, in years of wonders the voice of women is heard. Anna Frith was house wife, a mother of two and hungered to learn. Her voice was heard by Elinor Mompellion who taught her to read and right. Her knowledge lead her to studying medicine, which was however, not a typical womenââ¬â¢s thing in the 17th Century. Essentially women were not the ones working. Nevertheless, during the plague year these women were. For example when Elinor and Anna go down to the mine to extract the lead. This is not a typical women job. Other characters such as Mem and Anys Gowdie, along with Elinor decided to use herbs to prevent illness. Brooks placement of the Gowdies as healers and midwifes and Elinor as a determined learner of herbs, symbolises that they undertook dangerous ccupations which would typically be known as a mans job. Additionally, the voices of these women were valuable to the novel as it shows they rile against the patriarchal system, where women play a more dominant role. Annaââ¬â¢s reaction to her fatherââ¬â¢s death, symbolises that she displayed no sympathy towards him, after the way he treated her during childhood. I could not speak for my father or rather would not. Ultimately, showing that Anna was more superior over her father in times of crisis. The retreat of the Bradford family initiates the breakdown between the divisions between classes. Mompellion delivers his most compelling speech; ââ¬Å"let the boundaries of this village become our whole world. Let none enter and none leave while this plague lasts. â⬠, Encouraging all the townsââ¬â¢ folk to stay until the plague passes. However, the Bradfordââ¬â¢s, who were at the top of the social hierarchy decided to flee the town and break the social, divide. ââ¬Å"And so, as it generally happens, those who have most give least. And those with less, give mostâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Their cruel dismissal of their loyal staff shows that they thought they were ââ¬Ëaboveââ¬â¢ the situation. This is a representation of the classes, where initially we are shown the height of the Bradfordââ¬â¢s social class, juxtaposed with Anna at the lowest end of the system that had no choice, but to stay. The relationship between Elinor and Anna threatens the social fabric of Eyam as Anna was Elinorââ¬â¢s maid, who soon became her bestfriend and mother figure. ââ¬Å"She was my friend and I loved herâ⬠. Their friendship challenged the social structure of Eyam at all levels by the division of classes coming together. The division displayed by the Bradfordââ¬â¢s and the classes has had a huge effect on the village and is represented by the belief they all know share to stick together and work as a whole It is clear, the plague brings out the best in people by showing how a community depends on the values and expectations of a society. However, If these begin to unravel the social fabric of a community will be threatened and we will eventually witness the village and its people falling apart as faith is tested and this lack of underpinning effects all everything.

Some people use tattoos as a way of adding beauty while others use it for identification purposes (Margo 14). Tattoos were first developed in ancient Japan and later spread to other parts of the world. Nowadays tattoos are the in thing among young people and thatââ¬â¢s why the demand for tattoo artists has increased. A ccording to Margo tattoos are used to distinguish certain members of a group from the others. Tattoos are not limited to certain body parts and thus they can be drawn anywhere (15). Most Christians apart from the Catholic Church are against because they argue that the Holy Scriptures is against tattoos. Tattoos are associated to criminal groups depending on oneââ¬â¢s location. They are also known to reflect a personââ¬â¢s behavior. In recent years they were mostly associated with porn stars. A cross check on various religions indicate that religions donââ¬â¢t accept tattoos as an art. Tattoos can not be erased completely and even so a laser technique is employed. Traditional methods of tattooing can spread viral diseases such as AIDS because the tools come into contact with blood hence if they are not sterilized diseases could be transmitted from one person to another. Nowadays tattoo artists sterilize their equipments after they have been used by one client. Scarification includes inducing body scars by scratching or cutting the surface of the skin into various shapes. This kind of body art is recommended for people who are of a dark complexion. This is because tattoos are more visible when the surface of the skin is lighter in complexion. The intended shape of a scar may not be achieved because the wound usually contracts and stretches at different points. Scarification is not preferred by many people because of the obvious pain associated with it. It also exposes one to contracting HIV/Aids if the tools are not sterilized. This art is very rare today because most people have abandoned traditional practices. Body piercing entails making small holes that are used to hold jewelry. It can be done on various parts but itââ¬â¢s limited to various organs unlike tattooing because it can cause irritation when done on some parts of the body such as the buttocks. Body piercing is usually done to nose and ears.Advertising Looking for essay on art and d esign? Let's see if we can help you! In traditional societies piercing were common among males and females but the emergence of modern culture has discouraged body piercing among men. In todayââ¬â¢s world men who pierce their bodies are perceived to be social misfits such as homosexuals and criminals. Some people make sure they reveal their piercing by wearing clothes that donââ¬â¢t cover the pierced part. For instance women put on tops that are above the navel to display their pierced navel. Body piercing can bring about wounds that take long durations to heal but this is caused by sharing un-sterilized piercing tools. Body painting is another element of body art that is very popular. Itââ¬â¢s done by applying wet pa int on the skin. Several colors can be blended or isolated to create diversity. When painting is done on ones face itââ¬â¢s called face painting. Body painting is employed in various fields such as sports and military. In sports arena fans paint their bodies with colors that resemble their respective teams as a sign of solidarity. On the other hand troops paint their uncovered body parts with jungle green color to match with the environment which makes it difficult for their enemies to spot them. Paintings can only last for a very short period before they ware out but they can last longer if the paint used was mixed with oil. In conclusion, body art is not allowed in work places and learning institutions because employers argue that itââ¬â¢s not decent and thus it may give the wrong impression about an organization. The person who bears body art may be very innocent but then people address people according to the way they present themselves. Works Cited Margo, Demello. Child Socialization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Child Socialization - Essay Example Later they make them learn all their experiences and styles of living life to infants they are blessed with. This in all is known as Socialization. Socialization is the process to learn the norms, behavior, values and moreover identifying the individuality of own among a group of people. Not only this but also acquiring the social skill set appropriate for one in the social surrounding he/she is in. In other words, socialization is the second name of learning a human being carry out all through his life. For example, in every culture a girl from her childhood learns how to act perfect as a daughter, as a wife, as a sister and as a mother other than at the same time as a professional lady working to earn. When a child is born from that day, parents and other relatives treat him/her in the same manner as every other person in the same community treats their child. When the child, grows he is sent to a school where culture of the same community being enhanced. Child start learning for whatever he observes being happening with him and is made to learn by his/her elders. When he starts working, he chooses his own community, society that suits his nature. For example, a child born in Muslim society will learn many things in addition not to talk with different gender if the one is not your sibling or close relative. But as child grows and observes the world and society around him/her, one start talking nicely with other gender to establish themselves in limits. Similarly, a child born in a poor family never eats more than once a day but soon he starts earning and starts having money his way of living changes by eating thrice or sometimes four times a day. Every group of people has their own culture, beliefs, languages, rules and norms to spend life. Socialization is the process that makes the world interact with each other to know different way of living and changing their styles in a manner to adopt the best way to spend life. For example, if a child cries in a group of people, many cultures have many different ways to treat the one. One picks them and stands up rolling him to and fro. One gives them milk so that they can stay quite. Some beliefs that crying is not bad and child should keep crying so that his/her stubbornness won't build and they'll get strong. Some give them a toy to make them cheers and some takes out the child from the community in a separate room till child feel comfortable and stay quite. This style may raise child with a silent attitude. No style is wrong but different social techniques to handle a child. Natural Socialization is what a child learns from his exploratory and discovering mind. Planned Socialization is when child's elder (parents, teachers and other relatives) makes them learn their single culture. Positive Socialization is one when people stays happy and learns everything from their experiences by memorizing only good and positive deeds of life whereas, negative socialization, is what people learn from their past bad experiences. A WOMAN'S CURSE Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
A WOMAN'S CURSE - Assignment Example A woman going through such situation could be certain that she could become pregnant, though presently not pregnant, but healthy enough to become pregnant. Writing through the Beverly Strassmann empirical research work, having lived for over two years among the Dogon of Mali in West Africa, being part of their culture, and the menstruating women were being confined to menstrual huts that are behind the compound of the village. Urine samples collected by the researcher showed that the women did not visit the huts throughout the pregnancy or during the period when there is an absence of menstruation. This means that the menstrual taboos of the Dogon traditional culture were useful in providing men with the genuine signals of female reproductive status. An implication of Strassmanââ¬â¢s work might be reflected that modern lifestyles and the proliferation in the use of contraceptives might be in conflict with a womanââ¬â¢s naturally evolving biological developments. To support this proposition, she noted that the Dogon women menstruate 10 times while western women counter parts menstruate at least 400 times and even more. A feature may lead to cancer prone among the western women folk more than he Dogon traditional women folk. The study by Strassman, as analyzed by the author has proposed the interplay between biology and culture in human reproduction, a leading factor in human behaviour

Mexican Immigration Essay Example for Free
Mexican Immigration Essay People from Mexico during the years 1900-today influenced life in the USA in a positive manner. These people emigrated because of economic opportunity and brought their culture with them. The community into which they moved responded with both positive and negative opinions. Short term influences include Mexican food, Mexican events like Cinco de Mayo, Mexican music, and many other things from their culture. 2nd generation immigrants influence the amount of cheap labor filled up in the country, and Mexican culture being accepted into the mainstream such as entertainment. Long term impact of these immigrants may result in general acceptance of Mexican immigration, a backlash against the Mexican immigration, or possibly easier ways to move to This essay will show an analogy of the human body to be compared with Mexican immigration. The head being the thoughts and feelings of people in America based on Mexican immigration, the arms being the Mexicans contributions to arts and entertainment, the hands being the immigrants work ethic and their effect on the American economy, the heart being Mexican immigrations effect on religion, holidays, and traditions, the gut being Mexican immigrations contribution to culinary influences, the legs being how the borders have been crossed in terms of transportation and such, and the feet being the foundation of Mexican immigrants in the country. With relation to the head, in the United States, the arrival of Mexican immigrants has mostly harbored negative feelings. Of course, the cry of U. S citizens has been Theyre taking our jobs! which is somewhat true, but that will be discussed later on in this paper. Americans havent exactly reacted well to the movement of Mexicans into the country legally or illegally, but it seems that there is a new wave of acceptance of Mexicans in the country, with Mexican culture, entertainment, food, and humor in much of the mainstream. Of course, many of the second generation Mexican American citizens in the US provide an acceptance of the Mexican immigration, with many people trying to spread awareness of the good that Mexican immigration does and how their ancestors came in the past and gave them a better life than what they would have had in Mexico. In the future, I predict that the US population will accept Mexican immigration as acceptable and will not be so biased against Mexican immigrants. In relation to the arms, one of Mexican immigrations most positive aspects is the bringing of Mexican culture and entertainment into the US. Ever since Mexicans started moving into our country, their art, entertainment, and other aspects of their culture have seeped their way into the American lexicon. Mexican art is of course a big influencer in the South in states like Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Many houses in these regions are adorned with Mexican art or carry on a Mexican style. Of course this most likely wouldnt be possible without people coming from Mexico into America. There is also a huge rush of Mexican culture all over media. Lately, there have been many television shows starring Mexican actors where the theme of being Mexican in America and doing well has prospered. Shows like George Lopez where he constantly mentions the fact that hes Mexican and makes many jokes based on his heritage. Many shows like this, along with Mexican musics influence on different types of music have shown that Mexican immigration has been very positive based on its cultural impact. With relation to the hands, Mexican immigrants have had a long record of outstanding work ethic when it comes to arriving in the country and finding work. Mexican immigrants have been able fill up an incredible amount of so-called cheap labor and have had a positive effect on the US economy. It has been shown that Mexicans arriving from Mexico usually acquire jobs upon their arrival, and the amount of Mexicans receiving welfare is very low. Of course, theres always the American cry of Theyre taking our jobs! but actually, Mexican immigrants have created more jobs than theyve taken. The immigrants mostly take lower level jobs that have trouble being filled, which create many more managerial positions and supervisor positions, and those are mostly the jobs that Americans have been known to want. So Mexican immigrants may take jobs, but they also create more for the country, and thats very positive. In relating to the heart, Mexicans have been a large influencing factor in traditions and holidays. Of course, the immigrants from Mexico practice the traditions and holidays they did in their native country. In doing this, many people around them caught on to some of the things they were practicing such as Cinco de Mayo and fiestas. These practices caught on in the rest of the country and became very popular. Just like how in every bar and grill in the country, Cinco do Mayo is celebrated by half priced margaritas and Mexican dishes are discounted. In religion, Mexicans are mostly Roman-Catholic and are able to practice their religion easily. With relation to the gut, Mexican influence in food is outstanding. In every town and city across the country, theres usually at least one Mexican restaurant. In fact, the US is the country that has the most Mexican food, which is actually very ironic. Mexican food has been a true staple of cuisine in America for a long time now, and is incredibly popular. This has been the leading cause of acceptance for Mexican immigration mostly, because Americans seem to love Mexican food. The successes of Mexican restaurants like Taco Bell, Taco Johns, and On the Border have shown how positive Mexican immigration and influence can be. In relation to the legs, Mexican people have arrived in many ways. Along the border there are about 29 ports to access to be able to get into the country from Mexico, which the Mexican immigrants use to legally enter the country. They first enter there and then apply for green cards, visas, and American citizenship. Then theres always the illegal way of getting into the country. Many people go over the border by being smuggled inside a truck into the country, entering the country where they are no border police or personnel, bribing a guard to let them in the country, or somehow climbing one of the very tall barb wire fences along the border and running as fast as you can. Of course none of those ways are easy, being that on an average day, 3,000 people try to illegally cross the border and only an estimated 800 are able to make it through. It is hard to illegally enter the country, but of course many people do. Most people tend to think that most Mexican immigrants enter in illegally, but only 1 in 5 Mexican immigrants have illegally entered the country and not received documentation of their arrival. With relation to the feet, Mexican immigrants have a strong foundation in this country. There is a large Mexican population now in the US and it has a very large basis of culture and influence. Mexicans are beginning to be accepted more into the mainstream of America and have become an integral part of our country. There are many second generation Mexicans in government and politics as well as entertainment and the arts. Now in America, the Mexican people are widely accepted by US citizens and racism against them is beginning to cease. They have become a very important race of people to our country and our people. Overall, Mexican immigration is very positive. It brings many things to the country that wouldnt be here if Mexican people didnt move here. With their contribution to the arts, entertainment, cuisine, traditions, and the economy, Mexican people have become a great asset. I believe that more people will finally accept Mexican immigration as a positive occurrence and will greet new Mexican people with open arms. As the Mexican immigration continues, the country will only get better.
